What is happening + Assessment in Australians at war

It is a very short term for this particular topic.
We have only 10 lessons in total (4 weeks). See the schedule.
There is a major task due on the 11th of May. It is very important that you get started NOW.
You can download the description of the task here (this includes the e-version of the table you should use. You can also choose to make your own table or use headings): Year 10 Gallipoli Landing Work Requirement.doc

Handouts

Homework 23/04/09:

Your homework is to read the C.E.W Bean account of the Gallipoli landing in your booklet.
Then go to the table (or create your own / use headings) and fill in:
  • When written
  • Written for whom?
  • Primary or secondary Source
  • Nature of the fighting
  • Terrain
  • How people behaved
  • Key events

I will give you homework for each of the sections, or you can start working ahead now.
We will visit the picture in the senior school (in the stair well at entrance of SS)
We will watch a DVD in class.
After completing the table (=Task 1) you need to complete Task 2 + Task 3
This is a big task and you need to manage your time carefully to hand in on time.

Homework 04/05/09

Finalise CEW Bean + do the three letters home. Next lesson we will look at the picture in the Senior School so that you will be able to complete that one too. The DVD section will have to be done later.
Please note that there is also Task 2 + Task 3 to be done. I will set that as homework for next week.

Lesson + Homework 05/05/09

Have it done by the 13th of May, print it off and stick it in your workbook.
Part 1:
  • We will read "Gallipoli", page 18 - 21 in your booklet
  • Then open this document and fill in the missing words: Gallipoli_cloze_page 18 Hum alive.doc.
  • You can do this in Word on your computer. You will add Part 2 (below) to this document and then you'll print it off.

Part 2:
Just before Anzac day this year, the ABC released an amazing new website which delivers an interactive 3D view of the Gallipoli campaign:
http://www.abc.net.au/innovation/gallipoli/gallipoli2.htm
You will use this website to answer the following questions as best as you can:
  1. How does this presentation illustrate the risks of the landing (think of the terrain)?
  2. What are the objectives of the ANZACs – why are they attacking here (you may want to consult the ‘campaign overview’)?
  3. Was the attack doomed from the start? Why/Why not?
  4. Was the Gallipoli attack a military disaster? Why? What went wrong?
  5. How are the Turks portrayed? Is this different to what you would expect? How? Why?
  6. Is this website useful for historians? Why?

Copy these questions and put them underneath the previous "missing words" exercise.
Remember to print the document off because completing this exercise will be part of yoru workbook mark. I need to see the printed version.
If you don't finish in class, it will be homework for the next lesson (07/05/09)

Gallipoli Landing task is due on the 11th of May (Monday). You need to hand in a printed version, because emailed work creates too much trouble and confusion.

Homework Conscription:

For each poster,
  1. Decide if they support the Yes or No case
  2. Decide to whom they are appealing, whom they want to influence
  3. List the main reasons being put why people should support or oppose conscription
  4. Why might some be specifically directed to women?
  5. What effect might this have on women?
Here are the posters: WW1Conscription.pdf

Homework: Check your workbook 14/05/09

These are the items you should have in your workbook by the 14th of May. On that day I will take in your workbooks; you will receive them back the next day, either in your tute or come and pick it up in my office in S11.

Also see the exam prep section where you can download the exam advice.
I will hand out hard copies of that document next lesson.

Discussion / feedback area:

You are actually a "pilot class", meaning that you are one of the first to be using wikis in this way. To make this work in the future, I want to know what you think. All thoughts, ideas or comment are appreciated. Also, prove to me that you read this by leaving a comment! :-)
You will need a username and password, this should have been sent to you via email.
